Report on ACR Malta, AGM 2019

 

Association for Consumers Rights (ACR) calls for responsibility and law enforcement in the protection of consumers and the environment

The AGM of the Association for Consumer Rights was recently held on 23 March 2019, during which a number of resolutions which directly concern the life of individuals in many ways were debated and approved. Outgoing President, Mary Mangion highlighted the importance of educating and empowering consumers, especially vulnerable people such as the elderly, whom she visited throughout her years as ACR President, discussing their concerns and urging them to remain in touch with technological developments.

The Hon Treasurer, Anna Dalli presented the Annual Financial Accounts followed by the Annual Report of the Association’s initiatives and activities for 2018, by General Secretary, Grace Attard. In her conclusion, she highlighted the duty of all citizens to vote for a Europe of Values, Solidarity and the protection of Human Rights in the forthcoming MEP elections.

During the AGM, a number of resolutions from previous years were put forward for ongoing attention. These included, among others easier access to make retail payments for the disabled and older generation,empowering the consumer in healthcare services; promoting a culture of literacy in financial savings, investment and retirement income and better management of public transport and traffic congestion.

A number of Resolutions for 2019 were discussed, amended and approved such as Smoking in Public Places Leniency; Misleading Advertising, promotional material and information;Tackling Illegal content in online platforms; Reducing the impact of certain plastic products on the environment; Cybersecurity and Financial Payments – the need for a secure ecosystem; Optimising the benefits of consuming local products and finally Monitoring by ACR  on the “EU Commission Early Warning Report for Malta (24.9.2018) to meet the 2020 target on reuse/recycling of municipal waste set out in Article 11(2)(a) of Directive 2008/98/EC”.
